Everton 0 Chelsea 0

Chelsea had skipper John Terry sent off as they failed to reclaim the Barclays Premier League top spot against Everton at Goodison Park.

They had been expected to overcome the Merseysiders, but were up against it from the 36th minute when Terry saw red for a high challenge on Leon Osman.

The night ended with Liverpool still leading the table by one point, while 10-man Chelsea had lost their 100 per cent away league record after eight successive victories on the road.

Chelsea, who have not lost to Everton in the last 20 meetings, saw their first attack have an ominous look about it. The ball fell for Ashley Cole on the corner of the box, and his drive deflected off Tony Hibbert and gave Tim Howard a difficult, acrobatic save to make.

But Everton were able to produce some neat movement with their enforced line-up. Cahill, dropping deep, worked well as he interchanged position with Marouane Fellaini.

Petr Cech was forced to deal with a dipping Mikel Arteta free-kick, while two Leon Osman crosses from the right created opportunities for Cahill and Fellaini in the box.

Slowly Chelsea began to take control, maintaining possession with crisp passing as they forced Everton back.

Anelka hit a post from close range, but was adjudged to have handled in the build-up.

Chelsea had a firm grip on proceedings, but the match changed dramatically after 36 minutes when England captain John Terry was sent off.

Referee Phil Dowd was no more than 15 yards from a Terry challenge that was high and caught Osman on the ankle. In the current climate, the official probably felt he had to act decisively and Terry saw red having lunge in, connecting with Osman while off the ground.

Terry will now miss the Christmas matches against West Bromwich Albion and Fulham, plus the FA Cup tie with Southend United.

Chelsea sent on defender Branislav Ivanovic for Joe Cole at the break, while Drogba replaced Anelka.

Everton, though, must have felt that they had their best chance in eight years to register a win against the Stamford Bridge club.

But if that was to happen they would need to be more adventurous. Two minutes into the second period they were just that when Fellaini got on the end of a long Hibbert pass to test Cech.

Everton lost defender Joseph Yobo, who limped off with what looked like a hamstring injury. Leighton Baines came on after 61 minutes, with Joleon Lescott moving to central defence.

Cech had to hurl himself backwards to touch away a Hibbert cross deflected dangerously under the bar off Lampard. A minute later Cech was needed at his best again to touch over a Lescott header.

Baines then fired in a low cross from the left, and Fellaini's flick went just wide of the far post. Arteta then curled a free-kick just over the bar.

Everton were denied a goal with six minutes left when Cech touched away an Osman shot from Fellaini's cross. The goalkeeper managed to get his hands onto the ball as it rolled towards the line, seconds before Steven Pienaar arrived to bundle the ball home.

However, the effort was disallowed for offside against the South African, while there was also a question over whether Cech had control of the ball before it was kicked out of his hands.

Frank Lampard Opinions

Frank Lampard has been giving his thoughts on the weekend's two big Chelsea talking points - the Champions League draw and the approaching visit to Everton.

Our star midfield was a guest for 90 minutes on Chelsea TV's Friday night phone-in and was ideally suited to react to the news that the team will face Serie A giants Juventus over two legs next year.

Current Juve manager Claudio Ranieri was the man who signed Lampard for Chelsea back in 2001 and the two worked together for three seasons. Ranieri is now in his second year in Turin, his team standing second in Serie A behind José Mourinho's Inter. They finished top of their Champions League group having beaten Real Madrid home and away.

'It was a mixed reaction,' Lampard told Chelsea TV viewers on how the squad received the news of the knockout stage draw.

'It could have been better, it could have been worse. It is always hard to tell because these games are two months away. Our form at the moment could be better, particularly at home, but in two months' time everything could have changed.

'It will be great to have Claudio back,' he added. 'He still has a lot of respect from the players who played under him and the fans have a lot of respect also I think. I am pleased he is doing well at Juventus.

'He is a good coach. He taught me a lot about looking after my body and working on my power.

'At West Ham I used to run forward willy-nilly trying to score goals and make things happen in the box but it had probably become predictable to an extent. To play in Chelsea's passing game, I needed to learn about when to go forward and when to get on the ball in midfield.

'It must be an Italian way, they don't particularly bomb forward all the time. They are quite positional and then they arrive - and that helped me.

'As a team [under Ranieri], everyone harks back to him changing the team too much. His style now is he doesn't change the team so much.'

It may be two months before the Champions League resumes but in two days' time comes Chelsea's next big challenge, which is to collect three points at Goodison Park to send us into Christmas with spirits high.

If form is anything to go by, with Chelsea perfect on the road in the Barclays Premier League and Everton having lost four and drawn three of their eight home games, the visiting side must be favourites. Recent history is promising too with Chelsea unbeaten in our last nine Goodison games, six of them victories.

'I have scored a few goals up there and we have had some good performances up there,' said Lampard who found the net in three of the last five visits.

'It is a big game. Pre-Christmas, a Monday night, Everton are going to be having a go, even though their home form isn't great.'

David Moyes's side have not been helped in recent weeks by a rotten run of injuries to strikers. In their last outing midfielder Tim Cahill was played as lone front man although Everton are reporting that Louis Saha and Victor Anichebe are 'very close' to being fit.

The two forwards will have fitness tests before Monday's game but Yakubu and James Vaughan are definitely out.

'It will be a tough game because they are a physical side,' observed Lampard. 'Cahill is back in the team and he can score goals, particularly with his head. He has always got that in him.'

Chelsea TV will be building up to the Everton game from 6pm on Monday in Matchnight Live. Re-join the team at 10pm for post-match reaction and a live fans' phone in.

Loan Interest

As we head into the busy festive period, we take another look at the Chelsea players currently doing the business away from Stamford Bridge.

Claudio Pizarro, on loan with Bundesliga side Werder Bremen was a thorn in the side of former Chelsea manager José Mourinho last night, opening the scoring as the Germans ran out 2-1 winners against Inter in the Champions League.

However, Pizarro and his temporary team-mates still missed out on qualification for the knockout rounds and head into the Uefa Cup.

Domestically, Bremen sit in mid-table after a mixed run of form. Pizarro received his marching orders at the end of last weekend's defeat to Karlsruher, a game that followed a 5-0 thrashing of Eintracht Frankfurt, when our Peruvian forward helped himself to a hat-trick before being substituted just after the hour.

Those strikes took the 30-year-old to 10 league goals for the season, coming from just 13 starts.

Back in England, there are five Blues plying their trade in the Championship, after Liam Bridcutt's move to link up with Brendan Rodgers at Watford.

Jack Cork tussles with Crystal Palace's John Oster

The midfielder impressed on his debut for the Hornets against Doncaster, and followed that up with a strong display in front of the TV cameras against Tottenham a week ago.

He also featured for 68 minutes in the 3-2 defeat to high-flying Birmingham at the weekend.

Alex McLeish's side sit second in the table behind Wolves, where Michael Mancienne continues to make the headlines.

The 20-year-old has started six of his seven games for Mick McCarthy's side, of which they have won five and drawn one, conceding just five goals in the processs.

Back in mid-November, Wolves beat Southampton 2-1, a game which saw Mancienne come head-to-head with Chelsea team-mate Jack Cork.

The Saints continue to struggle near the foot of the Championship, but Cork has still impressed coach Jan Poortvliet.

He was also given a special honour for one so young, making a trip to Switzerland to make the draw for the 2009/10 Under-19 Championships at Uefa's headquarters. In his role as England Under-19 captain, Cork also picked up a Fair Play award in recognition of England's sporting conduct in last summer's championships.

Liam Bridcutt challenges Roman Pavlyuchenko of Spurs

Just one place above Southampton are Norwich, where Ryan Bertrand is in his second spell, playing on the left flank, usually in defence. The Chelsea man was a winner in the East Anglian derby at the weekend as Glenn Roeder's men defeated Ipswich 2-0 at Carrow Road.

That was Bertrand's 18th league game of the season out of a possible 21.

Finally in the second tier, Jimmy Smith, a former reserve team captain at Stamford Bridge, is with Sheffield Wednesday, who are on a four-match unbeaten run that included a 1-0 win over our west London neighbours QPR at the weekend.

In total the 21-year-old has made 11 appearances for the Owls, but has not featured since late November.

In League One, Shaun Cummings is a part of the MK Dons side that is challenging for promotion under Roberto Di Matteo, manager of the month for November.

Cummings has now made 16 league appearances and after returning from suspension helped the side to three straight victories before last weekend's home defeat to Scunthorpe. The versatile 19-year-old has been mainly deployed in a right-back role.

Finally, Lee Sawyer returned to Stamford Bridge in November after a successful spell with Southend United, who we face in the FA Cup third round on January 3.

In total, 19-year-old Lee made 13 appearances at Roots Hall, scoring three goals, and returned to the Chelsea reserve line-up for the 1-0 defeat to West Bromwich Albion on 24 November.
